For over a decade, a collective of Southern Africa

For over a decade, a collective of Southern African artisans has collaborated closely with The MiG-21 Project artist Ralph Ziman. These artisans are responsible for all the wire and beadwork elements in The MiG-21 Project and serve as his key logistical partners—facilitating the flow of templates, briefing documents and completed artworks between Los Angeles and Johannesburg.

In addition to their work on The MiG-21 Project, we are selling merchandise made by the artisans at @museumofflight gift shop. Check out the shop at your next visit!

Hello new and old followers. I want to (re)introduce myself to those of you who are new here.

I'm Ralph Ziman, an artist, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and currently living and working in Los Angeles, California. You probably recently came across my work including The MiG-21 Project, which completes The Weapons of Mass Production trilogy, now being exhibited at The Museum of Flight through January 2026. Most recently, my work has been acquired into the permanent collection at LACMA.

Over the years, I've created across mediums including film, photography, public intervention, sculpture, and installation. My works all draw from my experience growing up in apartheid South Africa, and interrogates human rights issues such as apartheid, the over-militarization of police, and state violence.

My work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at several galleries such as The Rendon Gallery in Los Angeles; Joseph Gross Gallery in Tucson, Arizona; and C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice, California, as well as group exhibitions at the National Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa; Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn, NY; the FNB Art Fair in Johannesburg, South Africa; MUDAC in Lausanne, France; and Forum Schlossplatz in Aarau, Switzerland, among others.
