COSTUMES / KNITTED REGALIA
The 7 unique woven outfits, called “regalia” were designed on a computer and made by the Boitumelo Sewing Project, a collective of artisans and crafters who teach sewing and weaving to individuals in inner-city Johannesburg.
The beaded panels are crafted by several South African artisans simultaneously. Upon each individual’s completion of a segment, several pieces of beaded panels are sewn together to create a cohesive, abstract masterpiece. The finished panel is then sewn onto canvas and framed with wire metal and glass beads.
